Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings

We recommend patients of all ages come in for a dental checkup and teeth cleaning at least once every six months. People who are at a higher risk for gum disease or tooth decay may benefit from additional visits. When we see your smile regularly, we can keep an eye out for the small changes that indicate much larger issues — like deep pockets between your teeth and gums that signify periodontal disease.

During a checkup and cleaning, one of our expert hygienists will remove plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth and around your gums. We’ll take notes on your oral health and provide expert advice to help you maintain better smile health in the time between appointments. Then Dr. Prentice will thoroughly examine your teeth and gums and take a look at your digital x-rays. If an issue is present, we will put together a plan for restorative care. As a family dental office, we offer preventive dental chekcups and teth cleanings for patients of all ages.

Gum Disease Treatment

Many adults have gum disease, the condition that causes bleeding, tender gums, tooth loss, and a whole host of other health issues. At Ponderosa Dental Center, Dr. Prentice offers gum disease treatment in the form of scaling and root planing. The treatment removes the infection-causing bacteria from above and below the gum line. Completed over several visits and sometimes combined with antibiotics for complete healing, gum disease treatment effectively treats moderate levels of gum disease.

Oral Cancer Screening

Regular screenings greatly aid in the early detection and treatment of oral cancer, the disease that claims the life of one person per hour in the US. During an annual screening, Dr. Prentice will examine your gums, tongue, lips, cheeks, neck, and overall facial appearance, looking for irregularities that could indicate cancer. If any suspicious areas are identified, we will provide advice to ensure you receive the prompt follow-up attention you need.

Fluoride Treatment

The mineral fluoride is well-known for its ability to strengthen tooth enamel and protect your teeth and gums from the bacteria in plaque. Drinking fluoridated tap water and brushing with a toothpaste containing fluoride provides your teeth with a big boost of protection. Dr. Prentice will evaluate your need for additional fluoride exposure during your routine checkup. A fluoride treatment is completed in just a few minutes at the end of your appointment or during a visit for any other dentistry service.

Dental Sealants

Children are especially vulnerable to cavities between ages 6 and 15, and the molars are at a higher risk because they are covered in pits and fissures that may be extra-difficult to clean. Dental sealants protect these back teeth from the bacteria that cause decay. They are applied painlessly, completed in just a few minutes, and can provide your child with years of protection against cavities. Contact us today to book a visit for quality children’s dentistry!
